Lexia LETRS

There is a lot of buzz in the education world about the “Science of Reading”. We are very fortunate here at Diller-Odell to be able to be a part of  Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling, commonly known as LETRS.

LETRS is a training course developed by Louisa Moats and Carol Tolman, both literacy experts and consultants. It’s for teachers who work with beginning readers K-3. LETRS teaches the five essential components of reading: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency. It also covers writing, spelling, and oral language.

The program is long, intensive, and can be costly.   It can take up to 160 hours to complete over the course of two years. There are opportunities for college credit as well. It has also become one of the most frequently used options for reading professional development.

The last two years, I was lucky enough to be part of a grant that allowed me to take part in the LETRS training project as part of the  Nebraska Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (NeMTSS). I felt so fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful program.

This year, we have a local trainer who is working with teachers from area schools to offer this training to other educators.  We are lucky to have four of our elementary staff participating in this wonderful opportunity. They have committed time outside of the school day, over the course of the next two years to being trained in LETRS.   This shows just how passionate educators are here at Diller-Odell, and we want to serve our students to the best of our abilities.
